There was a need for agricultural supply stores because it was common for families to raise their own livestock. After serving in World War II, Mr. Lee Barnes, sometimes known as "Shorty Barnes," built the Ninth Street feed store. His degree in agriculture, which he acquired from North Carolina State University, was useful in this business venture. His farming experience helped to make the shop the "go to" place for cereals, feeds, seeds, and hardware in West Durham. His kind, amiable demeanor gained numerous customers.
