The fathers of the woodpeckers that frequent your feeders may win the Father-of-the-Year Award, though that is arguable. Dad woodpeckers frequently work together with their spouses to build their nests during the day, but at night, the fathers frequently take entire responsibility for incubating the eggs and raising the young. Additionally, they feed the nestlings as frequently as or even more frequently than the moms do. Dads spend the next weeks guiding the fledgling brood to excellent food sources, including his personal favorite backyard bird feeders.
