Dr. Peter McKoy relocated to Camden, South Carolina, in 1972 to start a veterinary clinic. Church Street, a modest side street a block from downtown, was where the Wateree Animal Hospital could be found. Dr. McKoy had very little business, marketing, or advertising knowledge. During his first week, he saw 3 patients. He used a vintage cigar box filled with one hundred index cards as his filing system. The word of mouth gradually spread, and business increased.

Wateree Animal Hospital outgrew its three-room facility by 1975. Dr. McKoy was able to construct on the site of the current Camden location at 500 York Street because to the assistance of a local businessman, Mr. Bud Davis of Davis Printing Company. Since then, a second hospital has been opened in addition to the renovation and expansion of the Camden facility.
